School closure rumours untrue

From the Penarth Times, first published Thursday 21st Feb 2002.

ST CYRES School's Dinas Powys site will not be demolished to make way for housing.

Chairman of the governing body John Moses has confirmed the school will stay, and says there is no intention of selling the site for redevelopment.

It follows weeks of rumours concerning the site, which have left parents and pupils extremely worried.

Some parents were left confused after the village's Plaid Cymru community councillors said in their magazine Voice that they were concerned that the site "could be sold for housing".

However, one resident in last week's Penarth Times said: "This claim shows how little they know of the situation.

"The site at the top of Murch Crescent is within the 'green wedge' that cannot be developed residentially. The site can only be used for educational purposes."

Mr Moses said this week: "In addition to the site being subject to planning restrictions, there is no proposal or intention for the Dinas Powys site of St Cyres School to be sold for redevelopment.

"This would be quite evident to anyone who had read the consultation document recently issued to all parents and interested parties, including Dinas Powys Community Council, who have conspicuously failed to reply or make any comment."

He added: "Residents in the area can therefore rest assured that despite inaccurate rumours, there is no proposal or intention at the moment by the governing body of St Cyres School to sell any part of the site for housing."

n St Cyres School is split in two, with one site in Dinas Powys and the other in Penarth. The Dinas site caters for lower school classes.
